Using the Aikido Model for Resolving Conflict

The Human Capital Management subgroup invites you to explore the use of the martial arts principles of Aikido to practice leadership skills including centering, the gentle use of power instead of force, influence instead of domination, and focused attention as the keys to effective collaboration and teamwork.

Using the Aikido Model for Resolving Conflict from is a professional development experience that uses Aikido as a leadership metaphor.  It is high impact learning, but low impact physically. Through simple, yet powerful kinesthetic activities, participants will learn to:

  • Remain centered while engaged in conflict situations,
  • Understand and experience the difference between force and power, as well as the risks and benefits in using each, and...
  • Expand influence as a leader by modeling the ability to respond appropriately to conflict.

No athletic wear is necessary. You only need to feel comfortable moving in your usual business casual attire. However, it is suggested that you remove your shoes to participate effectively with your colleagues. Because we will be doing some light physical activity, a light breakfast will be served.

This unique program will be led by Andrew Cohn, founder and principal of Lighthouse Consulting.  Andrew is a highly trained practitioner and instructor of Aikido. He has offered a program similar to this one to students at the Wharton School, where he also coaches MBA students. Andrew’s consulting work focuses primarily on Fortune 500 clients in the areas of leadership development, team development, ethics, and conflict resolution.

Register now since registration is limited to accommodate the need for space for light physical activity.
